The group working on these grasslands existed informally at the Institute since 1984; its inception and early activities have been supported by the then head of the Dept. of Geobotany, the late Robert Neuhausl. In 1992 the group was formally established as the Dept. of Plant Population Ecology of the Institute.
In 1994, the Institute founded a Joint Laboratory of Plant Population Biology with the Dept. of Botany, Charles University, Prague.
