Analysis of selected shear flows

  • Identification: A2060803 - Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
  • Duration: 1998 - 2002
  • Principal investigator: Ing. Václav Kolář CSc.

The research work proposed represents (loosely) an advanced stage of the previous investigation focussed on free and semi-bounded shear flows. The proposal concentrates upon wakes, separated shear layers and wall jets, and consists of four parts. The first part is a direct continuation of the previous research work dealing with the plane turbulent wake and aims especially at the prediction method for vortex-circulation decay of large-scale vortical structures with the help of the vorticity-flux interpretation and the already existing extensive experimental database. The second part of the proposal concerns the explanation of some fundamental qualitative relations between velocity-gradient tensor, Reynolds-stress tensor, and related (coherent and incoherent) characteristics of nominally plane turbulent shear flows with large-scale structures (using the above mentioned database for test purposes). The third part aims at the application of diagnostic equations and/or vorticity-flux interpretation to the analysis of numerically simulated (velocity, vorticity, pressure) data in the test case of a plane laminar separated shear layer (or, possibly, mixing layer) with large- scale vortical structures. The fourth part deals with the generalization of the analytical results obtained earlier for the global similarity scales of swirling wall jets on bodies of revolution.
