Subject of research

The proposed investigation aims at developing effective tools of primary physical significance for flow-field analysis. The work deals with vorticity decomposition and decomposition of motion. Special attention will be paid to physical and applicability aspects of the vorticity decomposition which is an outcome of the recently proposed triple decomposition of the relative motion near a point (TDM). This novel decomposition technique provides a set of new kinematic quantities: two additive vorticity parts (and, analogously, two additive strain-rate parts) of distinct nature - the shear component and the residual one. The project focusses on the investigation of 2D and 3D physical aspects and practical applicability of TDM as testing on reliable experimental or numerical data is crucial. For testing of TDM, extensive numerical experiments based on the solution of Navier-Stokes equations will be performed for selected problems of viscous incompressible flows using finite element method.
