Insight into circadian clock within the rat colonic epithelial cells.
The gastrointestinal tract exhibits diurnal rhythms in many physiological functions. The aim of the study was to provide evidence that the epithelial colonic cells are equipped with a molecular apparatus generating rhythmic signal with circadian, i.e., about daily, period and drive physiological processes within the cells. The data demonstrate that expression profiles of so called clock genes, i.e., genes indispensable for the core clock mechanism, namely Per1, Per2, Cry1, Bmal1, Clock a Rev-erbα, exhibit significant circadian rhythmicity within the colonic clock. Moreover, expression of electroneutral Na+/H+ exchanger seems to be directly driven by the molecular colonic clock and exhibits significant circadian rhythmicity. Molecular colonic clock is entrained not only by the master circadian clock located within the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the brain, but under specific conditions of restricted feeding, it is entrained dominantly by the timing of food availability.
