Induction of muscle thermogenesis by high-fat diet in mice: association with obesity-resistance
Accumulation of body fat reflects the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. It is disputed for a long time whether excessive energy intake could induce metabolism of muscles and therefore increase energy expenditure in this tissue. Activation of such mechanism could help to counteract obesity and associated diseases. Experiments on two inbred mouse strains (C57BL/6J and A/J), which differ in the propensity to obesity, indicated that intake of food rich in fat induced fatty acid oxidation directly in the muscle, resulting in a partial dissipoation of metabolic energy as heat. This mechanism was only present in the obesity-resistant mice of the A/J strain. Results further document the importance of genetic background for the propensity to obesity and they are relevant for novel sttrategies for the treatment of obesity.
