Besides shrubs or rhizome herbs, a group of herbs with tubers can be found in the Berberidaceae family. This is typical for three genera (Bongardia, Gymnospermium, Leontice) growing from the Mediterranean up to China. Their centre of diversity lies in the wastelands of the Middle East.
