Statistics
The moment when gender studies turned their attention to science and the position of women in scientific institutions it became apparent that any starting description would be very difficult. The reason being also that the available statistics about science and scientists were not divided by gender. Today, when our claims should be supported by “hard facts”, statistics and exact numbers are absolutely indispensable for defining and presenting an issue as a problem. Major changes have taken place since then. At the EU level, the Decision of the European Union and of the Council Concerning the Production and Devlopment of Community Statistics on Science and Technology was adopted stating that special attention will be paid to gender statistics for science and research. Until recently the situation in the Czech Republic was very similar. It was nearly impossible to find statistics divided by gender. The situation has improved greatly with the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU.
