Much new knowledge has been discovered during the last three decades about the female mammal cell — egg (oocyte). This is because it plays an important role in natural reproduction and it is important as well in the reproduction of embryos in vitro. In these processes, attention is generally paid to oocytes which have terminated or almost terminated their growth. However, this article deals with the origin of the oocyte and the early phases of its development.
