Rare Asian Ungulates - the Spiral-horned Ox and the Kouprey

Robovský J.

In the article, up-to-date examination of horns believed belonging to a mysterious bo-vid ungulate from Vietnam and Cambodia - the Spiral-horned Ox or Khting Vor (Pseudono-vibos spiralis) by techniques of molecular biology are discussed. Some studies confirm the existence of the mammal species and suggest some evolutionary relations while others cast doubt on the authenticity of the taxon and suggest that the horns could be false. Numbers of another interesting ungulate from South-eastern Asia, the Kouprey (Bos sauveli) are so low that despite intense investigation the species has not been found for many years.
