Fern-leaf Peony in Transylvania

Čeřovský J.

Grasslands in the Carpathian Transylvania in Romania are an important biodiversity centre at the European level, where plants of different biogeographic affinities can be found. One of the most prominent native plant species is the magnificent Fern-leaf Peony (Paeonia tenuifolia). A nature reserve Zau de Câmpie near the town of Cluj-Napoca was established in order to protect the only area of the peony in the Carpathians. Sowing management, introduced by local farmer Marcu Sâncraianu, has proven to be the most appropriate conservation measure.
