This article summarizes the professional life of Prof. Zdeněk Veselovský (1928–2006), who for a long time was the Director of the Prague Zoo. His pioneering research in ethology in former Czechoslovakia should be also mentioned, as well as his remarkable efforts to apply current ethological knowledge in practice to wild animals kept and bred in zoological gardens.
