Collection of Microscopic Fungi ISB (CMF ISB)

RNDr Alena Nováková, CSc. – head and curator

  • The Collection of Microscopic Fungi of the Institute of Soil Biology AS CR (CMF ISB) was established in 1980.
  • In 1990 the CMF ISB was enriched by strains of ovicidal fungi isolated by Prof. MUDr RNDr Hynek Lýsek, DrSc. (University of Olomouc).
  • In 1993 the Collection of Microscopic Fungi was included in the Federation of Czech and Slovak Collections of Microorganisms (FCCM).
  • The Collection of Microscopic Fungi was focused on microscopic filamentous fungi, at present the CMF consists of around 1000 strains of microfungi (Zygomycotina, Ascomycotina and mitosporic fungi) – mainly isolated from soils of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Russia and Macedonia, then isolated from air, litter, caves, intestine and excrements of soil invertebrates, vermicompost.
  • The strains are maintained in tubes on slope agar media in refrigerator at 4 0C. For long-term storage of sporulating strains a maintenance in alginate pellets are employed.

Collection of Soil Algae and Cyanobacteria

Ing. Alena Lukešová, CSc. - head and curator

Culture collection of soil algae and cyanobacteria of the Institute of Soil Biology (ISB) was established as a working collection in1986. At present, about 2500 strains of algae and cyanobacteria (mainly Chlorophyta s.l.., Xanthophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, Cyanobacteria) isolated from soils and aerophytic habitats in various biotopes and ecosystems of different climatic and geographic zones are maintained by traditional subculturing. The highest number of strains originates from the temperate zone (CR, Slovakia, Germany, Canada), followed by strains from polar regions (Antarctica, Canadian Arctic, Svalbard, subarctic-Abisko) and from tropical and subtropical regions (Egypt, Brazil, Kenya, Cuba, Mexico, Indonesia). Strains are broadly used both for scientific and education purposes, and are available for any collaborative research including biotechnology use. Experience in different cryopreservation techniques obtained in the frame of EC Cobra project focused on conservation of microalgae and cyanobacteria makes possible to use them as alternative techniques for conservation of majority maintained strains at ISB.
