Environmental department deal with the application of natural history disciplines in archaeology as well as with the basic study of different biological disciplines which can be associated with archaeology or with the study of past in general. The department is thus rather heterogeneous grouping comprising some specific sections of anthropology, zoology and botany.
As to the anthropology the main study is confined to the genetics and demography. Genetics or archaeogenetics studies deal with the application of molecular biology methods reconstructing of demographic history of different populations. In addition to the isolation of ancient DNA from human bones provided by archaeological excavations, we deal with the interpretation of genetics pattern of the extant populations. This part concern actually the population history of Chad Basin through the study of mitochondrial diversity of autochthonous populations. In the rang of demography, the Environmental Department deal with the study of methodology artefacts which can be provided by the inappropriate methods of sex determination and age estimation on human skeleton. The inseparable part of demographic study of past populations is research of health status of populations in question. As a long-term goal, we consider an interconnection of demographic and population genetics researches for better understanding of micro-evolutionary processes which formed extant biological variability in human beings.
