The aerial archaeology programme is linked to several of the research projects currently being undertaken by specialised departments within the Institute of Archaeology. The programme itself is one of the key priorities of the Department of Spatial Archaeology; this department is presently administering a long-term grant-assisted project entitled "Prehistoric settlement patterns in Bohemia", which is one of the most extensive scientific projects undertaken in Czech archaeology. As a part of this project, aerial survey is the primary heuristic method for obtaining new information about the distribution, size and formal characteristics of prehistoric settlements in the landscape.

The results of aerial survey and photographs of various categories of cultural landscape are further used in projects undertaken by staff of the prehistory department (e.g. research into Early Iron Age hill-forts, the prehistoric settlement of the Kutná Hora region, fortification relicts from the period of the Thirty Years War at Třebele, and rescue excavation at Vliněves) and Department of Medieval Archaeology (the Čáslav region, Early Medieval hill-forts, fortified feudal seats).

Moreover, the Institute of Archaeology offers aerial photographs for the needs of other professional institutions, particularly universities, museums and monument care bodies.
