SUMMARY
Of particular interest in Pavel Kohout's autobiographical novel Z deníku kontra-revolucionáře [The Diary of a Counter-revolutionary] is the author's use of ready-made auxiliary syntagmatic axes and the meaning of events for the narrator (who is a character in the novel). The author does not explicitly reflect on the use of auxiliary syntagmas (such as seamanship, military science, the day to day operation of theatres, acting, novels, and plays). Their funtions oscillate between the practical (orientational) and the aesthetic (defamiliarizing). The characters of the novel become the playthings of these syntagma. The narrator poses the question of what will remain of the testimony once they are subtracted.
