Image processing and analysis
Application of methods of image processing and analysis represents an important part of the research into structures and textures of geomaterials and building materials at the Institute. Advanced devices for microscopic and macroscopic imaging of studied materials are available.
The LUCIA system is used efficiently for the digital image processing and analysis. It concerns in particular various measurements of shape and size parameters of grains and pores, proportional representation of individual components in studied material, orientation of cracks, etc. Materials, such as rocks and soils, geocomposites, building materials, ceramics and bioceramics, loose materials, etc., are analyzed quantitatively.
Techniques of image processing and analysis are also used in the area of material disintegration to analyse cutting grooves created by cutting tools, to process results of visualization of various types of water jets, and to study morphology of abrasive particles used in abrasive water jet technology.
The image analysis technique for quantitative analysis of underground working faces (as a part of geotechnical monitoring), quarry faces and rock profiles was developed at the Institute. The technique is appropriate also for evaluation of surface damage of concrete constructions or buildings damaged by undermining.
