The study of velocity field in selected configurations of open channel flows

  • Identification: A2060603 - Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
  • Duration: 1996 - 1998
  • Principal investigator: Ing. Zdeněk Chára CSc.

The aim of the project proposed is mainly experimental research of turbulent structure (flow resistance coefficient, local mean and fluctuating velocities, power spectra, Reynolds stresses, eddy viscosity, etc.) in the open-channel flows. We will establish the dependency of turbulent parameters on different types of rough bed and on bed obstacles simulated natural conditions in revitalised flow profiles. Main attention will be focused on the near bed region with maximum turbulence level. We also suppose (in co-operation with Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University) to perform some numerical simulations of selected configurations (roughness of bed, square sill) using commercially available software products (Fluent, Fluvius) and compare these numeric results with data obtained experimentally. It will help to analyse the applicability of formulas used in programs to the prediction of flows over rough surfaces.
