2004:11 The Formation of Group Mentalities in the Czech Republic after 1989 |

|
The objective of this volume of studies is to attain a deeper understanding of the processes behind the formation of group mentalities in the Czech Republic after 1989. This involves identifying the group stereotypes in thought and behaviour that take shape among these groups owing to the growing differentiation of life experiences.
The first study is a report based on the results of a qualitative research survey and presents information on the sources of the formation of post-revolution group mentalities. Group mentalities can be understood to be the relatively stable characteristics of group behaviour, group evaluations, and group orientations. The study examines individual socio-professional groups (labourers – routine non-manual employees – professionals – self-employed – managers – entrepreneurs), categorised further according to age, sex, and place of residence, for signs of shared features typical for the formation of new mental characteristics, i.e. “post-revolution” stereotypes of behaviour, new value hierarchies, and transformation thought patterns.
The second of the two studies follows up on the qualitative survey and uses data from the research study “Aktér” 2001 and 2003, conducted on a representative sample of Czech society, to examines the attitudes and values of the individual socio-professional groups described and their perceptions of society, the degree of trust people have in selected professional groups, and how that relates to the general degree of interpersonal trust.

Summary
The introductory study in the volume is a report based on a qualitative survey focusing on the sources of the formation of group mentalities in the Czech Republic after 1989. As a part of this survey, at the turn of 2003-2004, 72 in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives from selected professions in the socio-professional groups under observation. In these groups (workers – routine non-manual employees – professionals – self-employed – managers – entrepreneurs), categorised further according to age, sex, and place of residence, are examined for signs in shared features typical for the formation of new mental characteristics, i.e. “post-revolution” stereotypes of behaviour, new value hierarchies, and transformation thought patterns. This refers primarily to shared features relating to choice of profession, professional characteristics, auto-stereotypes, prestige of profession, comparisons of advantages and disadvantages of being in a certain profession with a view to the national environment, evaluations of changes in the profession after 1989, expectations with regard to the Czech Republic joining the EU, people’s recommendations to their children in favour or against certain professions, and various distinctions between socio-professions and other social groups (hetero-stereotypes).
The second study follows up on the report from the qualitative survey and using data from the “Aktér” 2001 and 2003 research studies conducted on a representative sample of the Czech society examines the attitudes and values of the individual socio-professional groups described and their perceptions of society. These data were used to test for possible manifestations of group mentalities in the areas of life strategies, self-evaluations of skills and character features, and life values and orientations, which provide evidence of the presence of distinctions between socio-professional groups. Thanks to the fact that the survey was repeated it was possible to observe changes in acquired data over time.
The third part of the volume focuses on the relationship between general interpersonal trust and trust in a specific social group. This part of the research is based on the Japanese scientist Yamagushi’s theory of the existence of a general degree of interpersonal trust and on the English sociologist Giddens’ theory that there exist various levels of trust in society, and that these are to a certain extent ordered hierarchically, according to how universal or how “face-to-face” a particular actor is with the object of trust. Here, “facework commitments” refer to relationships in which the actor encounters another actor face to face, while “faceless commitments” indicate the relationship of the actor to various social groups, organisations, and institutions. According to Giddens, the fundamental points for building faceless commitments are where an actor encounters representatives of a social group or institution, i.e. “access points”, which represent a key moment in establishing a relationship of trust or distrust. On the basis of these theories and using the data from the “Aktér” 2001 and 2003 studies the degree of trust among people toward selected professional groups in the services was examined (maintenance workers, marketers, restaurant service employees, dealers) along with how this in turn related to the general level of interpersonal trust.
