Structure, electrical and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline materials composed of carbon and 3d transition metals
Investigator: Ing. Oldřich Schneeweiss, DrSc.
Number of Project: 202/04/0221
Agency: Czech Science Foundation
Duration: 01. 01. 2004 - 31. 12. 2006
The aim of the project is the research on nanocrystalline materials based on carbon and 3d transition metals. The materials studied will be composed of nanocrystalline metal particles or clusters encapsulated or covered by carbon in the forms of graphite, amorphous matter, fullerene, or nanotubes. The research will be carried out with samples obtained by spark synthesis and laser pyrolysis and also by technologies of surface and film preparation (sputtering, ion implantation). The dependence will be followed between structure and phase composition and the parameters of the synthesis and subsequent thermal treatment. The electric and magnetic properties will be studied with respect to the influence of the structure and phase composition to understand the role of the interface between carbon and metal nanoparticles. Attention will also be paid to the influence of the atmosphere composition on the kinetics and products of their thermal transformation. The thermal transformations will be interpreted in terms of their mechanism and thermodynamic properties. The entire scale of carbon structures and metal nanoparticles will be studied by a combination of microscopic (TEM, HRTEM), diffraction (X-ray, neutron), spectral (Mössbauer, XPS, Raman spectroscopies), and electrochemical methods, that will allow both teams of applicants to collaborate efficiently.
