Numerical and experimental modelling of flow in open channel with submerged obstructions

  • Identification: GA103/03/0724 - Grant Agency of the Czech Republic
  • Duration: 2003 - 2005
  • Principal investigator: Ing. Zdeněk Chára CSc.

Subject of research

The aim of the project is to obtain overall information about flow structure in a vicinity of macrorough elements submerged at a bottom of revitalised river streams of smaller watersheads. The elements contribute to an improvement of water quality andnatural conditions during low discharges, on the contrary they produce an increase of flow resistance for high flow rate, and they significantly affect morphology of the channel. The project focuses on a detailed description of the influence of thesubmerged elements on flow structure for various geometrical arrangements including sequential effect of the elements placed in series. Research methodology is based on mutual combination both physical and numerical modelling using selected turbulencemodels. The influence of revitalised elements on flow patterns and free surface location will be described taking advantage of modern experimental methods (LDA, UVP) in tilting hydraulic flumes. Based on validation of numerical simulation of free surface

Research Goal

With the help of modern experimental techniques (LDA, UVP) there were obtained new information concerning flow structure in a vicinity of the macrorough elements and their overall effect on free surface stream. A possibility to modify a reverse flow down
