Changes of CO2 and water vapour concentration around the leaf are detectable by the infra-red gas analysers. In this way, the rates of photosynthesis (o) and stomatal conductivity () could be determined. The arrows in the graph show the possible difference between the photosynthesis rate of beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) in the current and doubled CO2 concentration.

It is possible to monitor the plant ability to use the light energy by means of chlorophyll fluorescence. The presented graph documents that the wide spectrum of grass species with different ecophysiological strategy during the solar radiation usage can be found.

In the last years, the research aimed to the study of spatial distribution of assimilation activity. Imaging fluorometry based on the principles of CCD camera can be used for this observation. The red colour characterizes the places of the highest fluorescence value. The blue colour characterizes the places where the light usage for photosynthesis is the highest.
