Electronic structure and magnetic properties of recording media

Abstract:
The magnetic properties (spin and orbital moments, magneto-crystalline anisotropy and critical temperature) of transition metals in bulk and thin film forms are discussed, from a theoretical point of view. It is demonstrated that the discussed properties can be reproduced within an error typically not exceeding 10 %. The use of theoretical modeling for understanding materials properties of magnetic recording media will also be discussed.
