In the Renaissance, the human body was drawn not only by artists; the knowledge of human anatomy and the corresponding drawing techniques were significantly advanced also by physicians and scientists who did not rely on hints in the ancient literature any more and who instead focused on dissection and scientific observation. Many ancient ideas about human anatomy, accepted uncritically for centuries, were totally rejected. New scientific description of the human body was presented in several anatomical atlases.
