Evolution of the genus Homo - 3 Hunting and Fire

Šmahel Z.

The evolution of Homo erectus went off in several parallel lineages. The "classic" Homo erectus evolved in Asia: its main lineage divided into the Continental North Asian (H. e. lantianensis, H. e. officinalis and H. e. pekinensis respectively) as well as the Island South Asian (H. e. modjokertensis and H. e. erectus) which were a defunct evolutionary line and ultimately become extinct. In Africa, the Homo sapiens lineage gradually evolved from Homo ergaster. Among its early forms, inhabiting Europe, H. heidelbergensis and H. antecessor should be mentioned. Their evolutionary success was the result oftheir more complex social structure, hunting, utilization of fire and the more developed tools of the Acheuleanic culture.
