ON ARRIVAL IN PRAGUE

Currency, exchange, payment cards

Foreign currency may be brought into the Czech Republic without restrictions. The official currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech Crown (Koruna česká, Kč). It can be purchased in banks and other exchange offices.

Exchange offices are offered in the airport and hotels. You might be asked to show your passport. The exchange rate is about 26 Kč for 1 Euro (as of January 2010).

Common international payment cards are usually accepted. Please make inquiries before asking services. Of most frequent companies, only Penny market and Norma do not accept cards.

Transport

The international airport Praha is situated in Ruzyně about 20 km (12 miles) from the city centre and 8 km from the Institute, and is well served by city transport (prepaid tickets have to be validated in the bus, see Public transport below). In addition:

International trains arrive in Prague at the following railway stations: Praha - hlavní nádraží (Main Station; also a Metro station of the red line C), Praha-Holešovice (also a Metro station of the red line C), and Praha-Smíchov (also a Metro station of the yellow line B).

No special transport for the Meeting participants from the airport and railway stations is organized.

Public transport

In Prague, an integrated transport system (underground Metro - runs from 5 a.m. till midnight, trams, and buses; Czech abbreviations "PID", or "MHD Praha" for its part inside City of Prague) operates without conductors. Tickets must be purchased in advance and stamped inside the tram or bus, or before passing the gates of the Metro. Most Metro stations are equipped with ticket machines. In buses, the most common 60-min tickets can also be purchased at the driver, but (with exception of buses 301-499) with additional charge of 5 Kč and and for the exact change only. Tickets are valid also on railway in most suburban trains, where they are to be stamped usually on the platform for at the station entrance.

If you plan to do more travelling within Prague, the short-term tickets may be useful for you:

Tickets are on sale at the airport, at railway stations, some newspaper stands and tobacco shops, at hotel reception desks, in restaurants, etc. Ticket machines are available in most metro stations and important tram and bus stops. During the conference, tickets can be purchased also in registration office.

Taxi

Taxi can be hired at the at the airport or railway stations. The fare is max. 28 Kč per kilometre and 40 Kč the boarding fee within the city boundaries (January 2010 prices). A special taxi fare from the Prague Airport to the Institute is 500-600 Kč, to downtown 600-700 Kč. The Airport minibus service CEDAZ provides a transport to the City mostly for 480 Kč (1-4 persons).

We recommend negotiating the fare before entering a taxi.

On-site registration

All participants, including invited speakers, should register. Registration of participants will take place in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (Praha 6, Heyrovského nám. 2).
