PROGRAMME

SCOPE

The Microsymposium will provide a forum for experts from academia and industry specializing in various aspects of biomedical materials. The primary objective is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of the relationship between the structure of biorecognizable systems and their physicochemical and biological properties. The pros and cons of traditional synthetic pathways and genetically engineered materials will be evaluated.

TOPICS

SESSIONS

The main lectures (see p. 6) and special lectures (see p. 7) will form the backbone of the programme. The presentation time for each main lecture is 40 min including discussion. The presentation time for each special lecture is 30 min including discussion.

One poster session will be arranged for presentation of about forty poster communications, the rest will be displayed in the course of the further programme. Posters are to be mounted half a day preceding the poster session in order to be freely accessible to participants for preliminary inspection.

All sessions will be held in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Praha 6 - Petřiny, Heyrovského nám. 2. The opening ceremony and opening lecture will take place on Monday, 17 July, in the morning.

LANGUAGE

English is the working language of the Meeting; no translation will be provided. All materials for publication must be submitted in English.

PRESENTATION FACILITIES

Blackboard, projector of 5 x 5 cm slides, overhead projector, and videoprojector (XGA) with the possibility of connecting to a notebook, to local PC (ZIP, CD, FDD 3,5) or to VHS are available for lectures and discussions; the slide projector will not function with slides thicker than 2.5 mm. Boards for mounting posters as well as pushpins and felt-tip pens are available in the poster area.

POSTER COMMUNICATIONS

Contributions covering unpublished results related to the programme topics can be presented as posters. The number of poster communications is not limited but every poster communication is to be registered for presentation on the Registration Form; the registered poster communication is accepted if the author's participation fee has been remitted.

Boards for mounting poster materials are 120 cm high and 150 cm wide. A label (20 x 30 cm) indicating the programme number of your contribution identical with that of its summary in the Programme Booklet will be on the top of the board.

PUBLICATION OF SUMMARIES

Summaries of main and special lectures and poster communications will be published in the Programme Booklet provided that they have been registered (see General Information, p. 13) and their camera-ready texts reach the P.M.M. Secretariat by 30 April 2000, either on diskettes or by e-mail. Please note that only files in RTF format or Microsoft Word files (versions 6.0/7) can be processed without difficulties. It is useful to use file names derived from the name of the participant. You may send also hard copies of summaries but not their facsimiles.

The receipt of the summary of a registered poster communication will be confirmed by the P.M.M. Secretariat. On the other hand, unregistered summaries will be neither confirmed nor published or returned.

Summaries should not exceed one page of the A4 size. Please keep the following typing specifications (for a sample, see the enclosure at the end of the Circular): width 180 mm, maximum length 220 mm, sufficiently big lettering (characters 2,02,5 mm, Times New Roman 15 points as an optimum), single spacing, except where additional space is required for mathematical expressions, chemical equations, or schemes. The text including the heading should be placed 15 mm from the left-hand edge of the paper and start 40 mm from the top edge of the paper to leave space for the programme number. The heading of every summary should consist of the title of the contribution (in bold capital letters), author's (authors') name(s) (in capital letters), and address(es) (department or laboratory, institution, street, city, province or state, postal code, country); the heading (all lines) should not be indented or centred. Figures can be drawn (or their photographs fixed) directly on the sheet; half-tone reproductions are excluded. Figure captions should be positioned below the figures; the size of letters and numbers (including sub- and superscripts) should be between 4 and 5 mm.

If you are submitting a hard copy, please note that it is to be typed on sheets (A4 size) of heavy paper. If a laser or jet printer is not available, please use an electric typewriter (lettering 2,0 mm as a minimum) with plastic carbon ribbon and correct all errors carefully using a correction ribbon or fluid.

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS

Both main lectures and special lectures will be published in a special volume of Macromolecular Symposia. Their authors are asked to send the manuscripts to the Microsymposium Editor, Dr J. Kahovec, at the P.M.M. Secretariat, by 30 June 2000 (the receipt will be confirmed).

A maximum of 15 pages is allowed for main lecture and special lecture papers. As the papers are published in camera-ready form, the manuscripts should be typed on special laysheets which will be sent to the authors, along with instructions and sample pages, by the Editorial Office of Macromolecular Symposia. A diskette with the text of the paper including figures should accompany the hard copy of the manuscript (if possible, not as a Macintosh file).

A possibility of publishing full papers based on poster communications in the field of fundamental research in Collection of Czechoslovak Chemical Communications (monthly in English) is offered provided that the manuscripts are set up according to the instructions for authors (available on request) and sent directly to the Editorial Office (address: Flemingovo nám. 2, 166 10 Praha 6, Czech Republic; phone/fax +420-2-311 12 71, E-mail cccc@uochb.cas.cz. The accepted papers are published within three months.

SOCIAL EVENTS

WELCOME RECEPTION

An informal get-together party with cold dishes in the Komenský hall of residence (Praha 6, Parléřova 6).

EXCURSION WITH INFORMAL DINNER

Visit to one of the historic castles or towns near Prague, followed by an informal dinner.

The excursion will not coincide with any programme session or any event of the Accompanying Persons Programme.

Please book for the excursion using the Registration Form (admission by tickets only).

FAREWELL TOAST

A farewell drink after closing ceremony in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry.

ACCOMPANYING PERSONS PROGRAMME

Unregistered accompanying persons and children cannot participate in the scheduled events; neither are they provided with lunch tickets (see p. 19).

REGISTRATION

Final registration

Any person wishing to attend the Meeting (including invited speakers) must submit the enclosed Registration Form to the P.M.M. Secretariat by 15 April 2000.

The Registration Form should be completed in three copies: any item not filled in means that the particular reservation is not requested. Please return the white and green copies and keep the yellow one; receipt of your final registration will be confirmed on the green copy sent back to you.

Please note that the title of any contribution is to be definitive and identical with the summary heading (see Publication of Summaries). The summary of a contribution does not substitute for the final registration.

Registration fees

The fees can be paid in any convertible currency but the total must be equivalent to the sum specified in Swiss francs (CHF):

The registration fee for an active participant includes meeting materials, admission to all sessions, refreshments, four lunches, and participation in the welcome reception and farewell toast.

The registration fee for an accompanying person includes participation in events according to the Accompanying Persons Programme as well as an invitation to the welcome reception and farewell toast.

None of the registration fees includes the excursion with informal dinner on Wednesday.

* The participant is requested to give the number of his/her IUPAC Affiliate Membership Card, valid in 2000, in his/her Registration Form and show the Card during on-site registration.

** Student-rate registration is available for those who can prove their full-time student status by enclosing a statement from their Head of Department or Institute with the Registration Form. It is also available for participants from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, and the states of the former USSR.

Remittance of fees

Please order your bank to transfer the respective amount or enclose a cheque payable to the account "ÚSTAV MAKROMOLEKULÁRNÍ CHEMIE AV ČR, Heyrovského nám. 2, 162 06 Praha 6, No. 01-00963070/0300" with the Československá obchodní banka (address: Na příkopě 14, CZ-115 20 Praha 1, Czech Republic; SWIFT: CEKOCZPP) together with your Registration Form. Be sure that the name of the participant and the Meeting are indicated in payments. If you use payment through bank transfer, please enclose a copy of your bank draft with your Registration Form or give the date of bank order on the Registration Form. The P.M.M. Secretariat will acknowledge payments by mailing the appropriate receipts.

Remittance of fees is to be made by 15 April 2000. If a cheque is delivered to the P.M.M. Secretariat or payment recorded at the bank in Prague after 30 April 2000 (late payment), the higher rate of registration fees will come into effect and possible arrears will have to be cleared at the Registration Desk. On-site cash payment of a registration fee as a late payment may be accepted only exceptionally and after previous agreement of the Organizers; without such agreement, the applicant could not be included in the list of participants in the Programme Booklet.

Cancellation

In the event of cancellation of participation, a full refund of the fees paid (less an administrative bank tax) will be made if the P.M.M. Secretariat receives notification before 1 June 2000. Only 75% of the fees paid will be refunded if cancellation is received after 31 May but before 1 July 2000. In any case, please inform the P.M.M. Secretariat where to return the payment (bank, address, and account No). Refunds will not be issued for cancellations received after 30 June 2000.

RESERVATION OF ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in the hall of residence

Participants wishing to lodge in a hall of residence (the Komenský student dormitory, Praha 6, Parléřova 6) should indicate their reservation requirements in the Registration Form. In the dormitory, two rooms form a unit with a shower and a toilet. If you wish to share double room with a fellow participant, please give the name of your roommate in the Registration Form; if no name is given, the P.M.M. Secretariat will feel free to make any occupation. As the number of rooms is limited, they will be allotted on a "first-come, first-served" basis.

Accommodation charges (including breakfast) are to be paid together with other meeting fees using cheques or money orders (see Remittance of fees):

The charges may be subject to change during the year 2000; possible differences will be settled at the Registration Desk. No accommodation can be guaranteed for participants who have not booked it before 15 June 2000, or for participants arriving at an earlier date without preliminary notification. On the day of departure, the room must be left before noon at the latest; after that time, the full charge for the following day must be paid.

All participants, including invited speakers, should register. Registration of participants will take place in the Komenský hall of residence (Praha 6, Parléřova 6), where some participants will stay, on Sunday, 16 July, from 14:00 to 21:00. On Monday, 17 July, the registration will continue (from 08:30) in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (Praha 6 - Petřiny, Heyrovského nám. 2).
