If we are to characterize the species composition of the Papua New Guinea mountain flora, we should speak of its composite nature. Many of its individual components are originally from the rain forest, but flowering relicts of ancient groups of so-called Gondwana flora are the most interesting items, such as Nothofagus and representatives of the families Chloranthaceae, Proteaceae, Cunoniaceae, Podocarpaceae and Araucariaceae.
