Territorial Signs of the European Brown Bear in the Ostrava Basin

Šuhaj J., Kuzník H.

The European Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos) became extinct in the Ostrava region (North Moravia) in the late 17th century. However, in the late 20th century Brown Bears began to return there from Slovakia. In 2002 and 2003 respectively, territorial signs, so-called bear´s mirrors (holes eaten in the bark on trees) were found at some sites near the town of Orlová (in the Ostrava region).
