Afro-Alpine Senecio and Lobelia Species

Esterková I., Studnička M.

The Senecio species with its thick stem and giant rose Lobelia plants growing in alpine zones of great volcanos in equatorial East Africa is frequently compared with the SouthAmerican Espeletia species (Živa 2005, 4: ...). They are characterized by the same life forms and their existence is restricted by very similar ecological factors (especially the combination of frost and dryness), but they can survive in even more severe and contrasting conditions. Cultivation of these plants is possible but it is very difficult.
