Isoplexis - Queen of Madeira

Studnička M.

Isoplexis sceptrum - a critically endangered woody species related to Digitalis plants - is an extraordinary rarity in the wild. It is a steno-endemic species of Laurus forest (laurisilva) covering an area of some 150 km2, where it grows in occasional forest clearings and rivulet valleys. The Isoplexis genus has four species, which form a part of the world heritage thanks to their historical origin and interesting life-form, more suited to the warm Tertiary climate than to contemporary conditions.
