The Marsh Fritillary Butterfly - an Endangered European Butterfly

Hula V., Fric Z., Pavlíčko A., Konvička M.

Recent achievements in conservation-oriented research into the endangered Marsh Fritillary Butterfly (Euphydryas aurinia) in the Czech Republic are summarised in this article. The species has declined greatly due to the intensification of agriculture. At present, it is restricted to West Bohemia, where 28 occupied colonies are known. The majority of colonies are small, restricted to semi-natural humid meadows, and threatened either by abandonment or by ongoing intensive agricultural activity in the vicinity. A brief overview of the species life history and guidelines for site management are also presented.
