When Australian salt basins are sometimes filled with water, lake banks are covered by a multicoloured carpet of various halophyte plants for some days. In lakes, a surprisingly large number of invertebrate species usually appear at that time. They have to complete their life cycles in a very short period, because the lake is replaced by a desert again within days or weeks. Dried salt is a valuable source of preserved local fauna items for entomologists.
