Tropical trees Amherstia nobilis (Fabaceae) and Couropita guianensis (Lecythiaceae) are two imported ornamental species cultivated in the Botanic Gardens of Rio de Janeiro. Their strik-ing flowers have an extraordinary morphology, being adapted to bird pollination and bat pol-lination respectively. Nevertheless, their pollination is not fully understood. Concerning nobi-lis it is impossible, because the species is extinct from natural ecosystems.
