An Ecotone – a Standard Interface or a Specific Habitat?

Hora P., Tuf I.H. a kol.

An ecotone is a transition zone between two particular ecosystems. Compared with adjacent habitats, on the ecotone there is often higher species diversity, as well as higher likelihood for invertebrates inhabiting the layer above the soil surface (the epigeon) to be captured by pitfall traps. Nevertheless, the phenomenon can have various causes. The authors studied the epigeon’s movement within a floodplain forest/wet meadow interface. For most species examined, the ecotone is just an interface rather than a specially preferred space.
