"Imitatio naturae", i.e. imitation of nature, was a motto of the whole Renaissance period. At that time, intellectuals were very much interested in scientific knowledge: this approach also influenced the arts. Artists were not satisfied with just mastering the details of plants drawn by nature, but they wanted to have deep knowledge of plant anatomy and morphology. Plants were drawn by A. Dürer or L. da Vinci amongst others. A significant step in drawings for herbaria was the discovery of typography.
