In many European regions with oceanic climate and sand soils poor in nutrients, the intensive usage of the countryside ever since the beginning of permanent settlement has given rise to immense heathland areas. These have been conserved thanks to special management using mainly sheep pasture. During the 19th and 20th centuries the area of heathlands diminished considerably due to changes in land use and consequently their conservation has become important, at least in protected areas with special management. Lüneburg Heathland in Lower Saxony is one such area.
