Elbe River Fishes at the Beginning of the 21st Century

Slavík O.

In Central Europe, large rivers have been canalised and fragmented by dams at many locations. Hence it is quite unique to find a 40-km-long stretch of the River Elbe between the Střekov floodgate near Ústí nad Labem and the German border, where technical adjustments have not changed the river gradient. As the water quality is gradually restored, fish community ecology, reproduction and migration have been studied there, e.g. using telemetry.
