The Palo Verde National Park is situated in the Pacific lowlands in Western Costa Rica. Wetlands in the vicinity of the Palo Verde Lagoon and Rio Tempisque are the most important wintering ground for waterfowl in Central America.Hence they are internationally protected by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially in the Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention).
