On Bionomics of a Rare Checkered Beetle

Kaděra M.

The Checkered Beetle (Aporthopleura sanquinicollis) is a rare and rapidly disappear-ing insect species known from many Central and Southern European countries. Moreover, only individual specimens are found. The author studied the beetle species in floodplain for-ests in southern Moravia. It was found that it exclusively inhabits the English or Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur). The trees should be some centuries old and have partly decayed sap-wood infected by the Deathwatch Beetle (Xestobium rufuvillosum), since the Checkered Bee-tle´s larvae feed on the developmental stages of the latter.
