The coast of Lower Saxony was formed during the Holocene period by a rise in the level of the North Sea. Today the coast is bordered by coastal lowlands called "Watt" in German, which are inhabited by a specific halophilic flora. The presence of certain species is influenced by the degree of flooding and the length of the flooding period and thus different plant communities are formed there, from those with sparse vegetation up to saline meadows, depending on the distance from the sea level. In the direction towards the sea, the line of moving sand islands with typical sand-loving flora follows after the Watt.
