During evolution numerous eye types have evolved in various animal groups. Even within a particular group, an indication of the consecutive evolution of eyes, from simple to more complex forms, can only be found with difficulty. Molecular biology and genetics play a key role in examining the origin of eyes and the Box Jellyfish (Tripedalia cystophora) has been a valuable model organism. It is assumed that invertebrate and vertebrate eyes are the result of parallel, not convergent evolution.
