The Elbe Salmon in Historical Records and at Present II.

Andreska J.

The second part of this contribution deals with the final stage of the presence of the Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) population in the Elbe River until the moment of its ultimate extinction in the mid-20th century. It describes Professor Antonin Frič's rescue operation, during which ten million young salmon were reintroduced. It also describes the gradual change of the Vltava and the Elbe Rivers into a traffic route. The final part of the text deal with the succesful endeavour to reintroduce the salmon to the downstream of the Elbe River and its tributaries, as well as future prospects for its return to Czech rivers.
