Czech scientists achieved worldwide recognition for their discoveries and innovative approaches in many scientific disciplines. Czech laboratories have developed many practical inventions including a computer operated by the eye for the disabled, cutting edge medicines for the treatment of HIV, cancer and Hepatitis B as well as criminal identification based on an individual’s behavior. The discoveries of Czech scientists are not limited just to the modern day The first screw propeller was patented in 1826 by Josef Ressel. By 1829 this new method of propulsion was tested on a boat fitted with the technology. Prokop Diviš invented the first lightening rod, while physicist František Křižík patented the first arc lamps, among other inventions. In 1959 Jaroslav Heyrovsky won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of polarography. Chemist Otto Wichterle achieved renown for gel contact lenses, which are still used today. The Academy of Sciences of the CzechRepublic provides a background to these extraordinary scientists.
