In a series of articles the record of fossil mammals that are significant within the territory of the former Czechslolvakia or the present-day Czech Republic will be described. In the first part different types of sites of fossil vertebrates are characterized in general. In the following issues historical and recent records will be reported and compared with similar ones elsewhere in the world.
