Ngorongoro   -   Sun symmetric multiprocessor, UPPMAX, Uppsala

SMP system Sun Fire E15000 with the theoretical top performance 86 GFlops/s. Its configuration includes 48 UltraSPARC-III/900 processors, 48 GB of shared memory, 8 MB of L2 cache, 12 drives of 18 GB and Fibrenetix RAID controller with 3.4 TB disk storage.

The system is divided into four separate virtual servers called domains. The largest Simba has 36 CPU's and 36 GB of memory, the others Mbogo, Tembo and Duma have 4 CPU's and 4 GB of memory each.

The core of the Sun Fire architecture is the Sun Fireplane system interconnect, which is a packet switched broadcast medium. Each domain has a peak data bandwidth of 9.6 GB/s, whereas the domain to domain bandwidth (non-local accesses through a crossbar) is limited to 2.4 GB/s.

Installed software includes operating system Solaris 5.9, Sun Grid Engine for distributed resource management and Sun implementation of MPI for communication of parallel processes.
