Vivipary in Fish 2. True Viviparity – Surface Fish

Slaboch R.

Vivipary has been a major step forward in evolution. All groups of livebearers invest in the quality and competitiveness of their offspring. Unlike ovovivipary, the young are nurtured by their mother through various specific tissues during the entire embryogenesis. The continuous input of nutrients make possible longer embyrogenesis, resulting in larger and more viable offspring, which can swim and ingest immediately. Although there are more viviparous families, only two of them occur in fresh water – Anablepidae and Goodeidae. This article deals with the first one.
