X-ray emission of massive stars

X-ray emission is ubiquitous among massive stars. It provides the high-energy window in the stellar winds and allows deep insight in the wind structure. The high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the inhomogeneous stellar winds. The mechanisms responsible for the generation of X-rays are not yet fully understood. We have fairly good ideas of how X-rays are produced in O stars, we can guess what may be the mechanism in B stars, but we have little understanding yet about X-rays from WR stars. I will briefly review the new observations of massive stars with X-ray telescopes, which continue to widen our knowledge about massive stars and their winds. I will also briefly review the theories and models of X-ray emission in massive stars.
