Ichtyoparasitology in Africa

Jirků M.

Czech parasitologists are conducting the most intensive fish parasitology research on the African continent. The main project focuses on Lake Turkana (Kenya) and the Sudanian portion of the Nile basin. Turkana used to be a part of the Nile basin as recently as 3 000 years ago. Its environmental conditions resemble those which affected African basins during the dry periods of the Pleistocene. Taxonomically diverse communities of fish and their parasites provide a model for the elucidation of the evolution of freshwater organisms on a continental scale.
