Creation of databases, participation in the activities of international data centers

J. Rakosnik is the head of the Czech editorial unit of Zentralblatt fur Mathematik, which was established by the Institute in 1997 and cooperates with the editors of Zentralblatt on the preparation of inputs to the database MATH.

I. Saxl: Database of Voronoi tessellations generated by random point fields. Internet, http://fyzika.zlin. vutbr.cz/voronoi/.

Work and administration of joint laboratories (with universities or other institutions)

Joint institution of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Charles University: Center for Theoretical Studies (B. Balcar is involved).

Joint department of the Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University, and the University of Chemical Technology: DIMATIA (J. Krajicek, P. Pudlak, J. Sgall, and A. Sochor are involved).

Publishing and editorial activities of the Institute

The Institute is the publisher of three mathematical journals, Applications of Mathematics (established about 50 years ago), Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal, and Mathematica Bohemica (their parent journal was established in the 19th century).

Moreover, a Czech editorial unit of Zentralblatt fur Mathematik is located in the Institute.

Further, the Institute publishes, in cooperation with Albra Publishing House, textbooks for mathematics for schools. In the period 1995-1999, 14 textbooks were issued.

The Institute also publishes a series of preprints of the members of the Institute. 36 preprints were issued in 1995-1999.

Member of the Editorial Board of the Academy of Sciences: J. Seidler

Members of Editorial Boards of mathematical journals in 1995-1999

The Institute edited and published the following proceedings in the period 1995-1999.

Application of research results to expert activities, consulting

A. Kufner – University of Lulea (Sweden): 1998 – member of a jury for doctor’s degree and an reviewer for the Ph.D.; 1999 – external expert reviewer for a habilitation and a member of a jury for Ph.D. defense.

P. Prikryl – cooperation with the Goverment Board for Research and Development.

See also J. Chleboun and J. Nedoma, item III.9.

Activities aimed at the general public, participation on education of high school students

The Institute organized the Day of Open Door for the general public in 1998 and 1999 (P. Prikryl and a number of other research workers). Each year some 20 visitors came to get an impression about the Institute: high school students (sometimes with teachers), scientists from other fields, and, scarcely, even complete laymen.

The Institute takes part in the organization of the elementary and high school student competition Mathematical Olympiad (M. Englis, M. Fiedler, K. Horak, J. Simsa).

J. Simsa was by the Ministry of Education appointed the leader of the Czech representation on the International Mathematical Olympiad in Canada (1995), India (1996), Argentina (1997), Taiwan (1998), and Romania (1999).

M. Baresova and M. Ticha published 44 articles and lectures at conferences and seminars for elementary school teachers. M. Krizek, I. Saxl, S. Schwabik, and K. Segeth published popular articles and/or read popular lectures during 1995-1999.

M. Krizek (1998) and J. Simsa (1999) were awarded the Prize for Popularization of Science by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
