Satisfaction with Housing among the Czech Population

Prague: Institute of Sociology, Czech Academy of Sciences.

Since approximately the 1970s, particularly in the English-speaking countries, a type of survey has appeared which aims at ascertaining how satisfied people are with their housing (tenant surveys), especially among tenants of so-called social housing. The surveys have been aimed at rendering the work of independent and public operators of housing more effective, a process which operators have been forced towards owing to new central tax and expenditure policies. Gradually, however, surveys on tenant satisfaction with their current form of housing acquired a broader context and began to be conducted on nation-wide samples of respondents. In the 1980s the theoretical foundations of this type of research were laid and thanks to the discovery of multidimensional statistical methods a detailed analysis of satisfaction with housing became the subject of a number of research projects throughout the world. The aim of this study is to describe, as precisely as possible, and with the use of multidimensional statistical methods and path analyses, the process behind the formation of satisfaction with housing in the Czech Republic, and to trace the main factors of its variability. For this purpose data from the statewide survey Attitudes towards Housing 2001 was used, which was carried out by the Socio-economic Housing research team of the Institute of Sociology AV CR last year. Thanks to an additional survey, much smaller in terms of its scope, which focused on attitudes towards housing among a group of respondents living in market rental housing in Prague, it was possible to compare the attitudes of the "majority" population with attitudes of this specific group of citizens; this comparison makes up the content of the supplementary chapter which accompanies the study.

This study emerged as a part of the project "Social Aspects of Housing among Czech Households and How They Have Changed during the Period of Transformation in a Comparison with the Situation in the EU Countries", with the grant support of GA AV CR, Grant no.: S7028004.
